Health Statement

Participation in sports activities always involves health risks and you are responsible for your own health at all times. It is your responsibility not to exceed your physical capabilities. If you are concerned or, or if you know that your health may interfere with safe participation in sporting activities, contact a medical professional and follow his/her advice before using the sports and exercise provider's facilities and equipment. Make sure you are aware of the rules and instructions, including warning signs at the sports and exercise provider. Do not participate in activities that you have been told are not suitable for you. Let the staff at the sports and exercise provider know immediately if you do not feel well while using the facilities and equipment.

Test yourself using PAR-Q

Using this PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire), you can easily determine whether you can participate responsibly in sports and exercise activities. This test is suitable for anyone between 15 and 69 years old.

Use common sense when answering these questions. Read the questions carefully first, then answer each question honestly with Yes or No.

Start PAR-Q test

1. Has a doctor ever told you that you have a heart problem and that you should perform physical exercise only on a doctor's advice?

2. Do you experience chest pain on physical exertion?

3. Have you experienced chest pain in the past month while not performing physical exercise?

4. Do you ever lose your balance due to dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness?

5. Do you have a skeletal or joint problem (e.g. of back, knee or hip) that may be aggravated by a change in you physical activity pattern?

6. Does your doctor currently prescribe any medication (e.g. pee pills) for blood pressure or heart problem?

7. Are you aware of any other reasons why you should not engage in physical activity?

If you answered yes to one or more questions, consult a doctor before starting sports and exercise activities or before taking a fitness test. Tell your doctor about the PAR-Q and which questions you answered YES.

If you answered NO to all the questions honestly and truthfully, then you can reasonably safely assume that you can start getting more active - start slowly and build up the activities slowly. This is the easiest and safest way.

It is possible to have your fitness tested at most sports and exercise providers. This is an excellent way to assess your overall fitness. This will also help you best plan which activities suit you best. It is recommended that you have your blood pressure measured. If your blood pressure is above 144/94, consult your doctor before becoming more active. Wait to become more active:

If you are not feeling well because of a temporary illness such as a cold or fever. Wait until you are better.

If you are pregnant - consult your doctor before becoming more active.
